Seminoles Outlast Jackets in OT
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Men's Lacrosse team faced off against a traditionally strong Florida State team on Saturday to open the 2026 season following a weather induced cancellation of their first scheduled game against New Hampshire the week before.
The Jackets sporting 20 new players on their roster graduated over 900 career points and multiple All America players from their 2025 National Runner Up team.
Freshman Trey Ridder opened the scoring for the Jackets. Florida State tied the game shortly after. Fellow rookie Graeme Navarro scored the next two goals of the game to give the Jackets a 3-1 lead. In preview of how back and forth the game would be, the Seminoles scored four straight goals to take a one goal lead. Sophomore Augie Werthman scored his first of the season to tie it up before Florida State added a goal of their own to take a 5-4 lead after one quarter.
After a few scoreless minutes in the second quarter freshman Will Ahmuty scored the first goal of his career to tie the game. The Jackets closed the second quarter strong behind goals from Ridder twice, Navarro, and Matt Seifert to take a 9-5 lead. The Jacket defense led by George Corbin, Mitch Savalli, and Zach Harrison clamped down on the Florida State offense and Owen Armentrout gobbled up and shots the Seminoles were able to send his way and the Jackets held their hosts scoreless for the whole of the second quarter.
The third quarter was choppy and marred by penalties. The Georgia Tech offense that seemed to find its footing in the second quarter seemed to lose its rhythm in the quarter and only managed two goals, one each from Seifert and Navarro. The Jackets built a lead of 11-6 before allowing a 4-1 run by the Seminoles to close the quarter.
The Jackets held a 12-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Jackets got goals from Wagnon, Seifert, and Navarro in the fourth quarter, but allowed the Seminoles to score five of their own to send the game to overtime.
The Seminoles won the faceoff in the extra frame and were able to end the game with a shot from the right wing and take the 16-15 win.
The Jackets will open their home schedule on Friday February 13 against Auburn at 7pm.
