The Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Men's Lacrosse team returned to Roe Stamps Field on Sunday afternoon to face off against a divisional foe in the Alabama Crimson Tide, looking to bounce back after a tough defensive battle against Auburn earlier in the week.
The first quarter opened with a goal from Tate O'Leary. After Alabama answered, the teams traded saves and defensive stands until Navarro was able to once again put the jackets on the board. A quick follow up tally from Augie Werthman put that Jackets up a comfortable 3-1 after the first quarter.
The second quarter once again featured timely defence and both goalies making saves. Alabama was able keep the Jackets off the scoreboard, while adding two themselves to send the game tied at three into the half.
The third quarter opened with a two quick Yellow Jacket goals, one by DJ Louis followed by a Trey Ridder finish to put the Jackets back up by two. However Alabama refused to let the Jackets get comfortable, and scored next to trim the lead back to one. A Graeme Navarro goal pushed the lead to 6-4 Jackets, before an Alabama buzzer beater cut it back to one heading into the final quarter.
The Jackets once again opened the quarter up strong, with back to back Navarro goals gave the Jackets their biggest lead of the day at 8-5. They were able to slow the game down and rely on their stingy defense and outstanding goalkeeping (Armentrout 13 saves) to secure the victory. Two goals each way saw a game in which the Jackets never trailed, but also never felt overly comfortable end with a 10-7 Victory.
The win puts the Jackets at 1-0 in the division, and they return to action in a pivotal divisional tilt at South Carolina Friday February 20th at 7pm.
