Young Jackets Doomed by Slow Start

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Men's Lacrosse team traveled to Columbia, SC to face their most common opponent and fiercest rival over the last several seasons, the South Carolina Gamecocks.

The Jackets could not find their footing early and gave the Gamecocks extra possessions and they were all too happy to take advantage and built a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.  The Jackets had a few opportunities, but could not break through.

The second quarter was more of the same as the Jackets struggled to take advantage of their opportunities and gave their opponents plenty of possessions.  The Gamecocks led 6-0 before freshman Trey Ridder found classmate Graeme Navarro to break the seal.  That would be the Jackets only goal of the half as the hosts lead 8-1 at the half.

The Jackets took the break to find their spirit.  Ben Skopicki won the opening faceoff of the second half and pushed a fast break before finding Asher Wagnon who fired a shot into the bottom of the net.  The Jackets began to fight all over the field and made South Carolina work for their chances.  The Jackets closed the quarter with back to back goals from Augie Werthman and Owen Smith within 18 seconds to bring the game to an 11-6 score entering the final frame.

The Gamecocks scored first in the fourth quarter, but the Jackets tied two goals together to get to 12-8, which was the closest the Jackets would get before the Gamecocks added three late goals.

The Jackets fought their way out of a hole, but the hole proved to be too deep.  The loss brings the Jackets to 1-1 in the SELC North and 1-3 overall.  The Jackets head to Raleigh to play NC State and James Madison next weekend.
