Jackets Strong Comeback Falls Short in OT
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were back on Roe Stamps Field on Saturday to take on the Florida Gators.
The two teams are no strangers having played every year 2021 and meeting in the SELC tournament each of the last three seasons. The Jackets started slow allowing the Gators to build a 3-0 lead before Matt Seifert got the Jackets on the board.
Florida built the lead to 5-1 in the first half. Matt Seifert scored another goal and Will Ahmuty capitalized on an extra man opportunity to bring the game to 5-3 at the half.
Both teams scored two goals in the third quarter with the Jackets tallies coming from David Hull and Brayden Smith.
Freshmen Ahmuty and Nick French scored back to back goals within twelve seconds to tie the game at seven. The Gators scored on a scramble off of the ensuing faceoff to get back in front. A few minutes later the Gators scored again to go ahead 9-7.
Matt Seifert scored an inside goal to pull the Jackets within one with 2:13 to play. The Gators got the ensuing faceoff, but the Jacket defense stood tall and got the stop. George Corbin brought the ball down and the Jackets called timeout. The Gators pressured out of the timeout hoping to disrupt the Jackets' plan out of the time. Seifert attacked the pressure and drew a slide before finding D.J. Louis, who fired home a shot to tie the game with fifteen seconds remaining. The Jackets got the ball back, but could not muster a shot and the two teams headed to overtime.
The Gators got the opening possession, but turned the ball over. The Jackets called timeout once they got the ball cleared. The Jackets created an opportunity but could not end the game. The Gators then had a possession, but the Jackets turned them away again before turning the ball over in the clear. The Gators took advantage of the extra possession and found an open man inside who scored the game winner.
The Jackets will now travel to Boston to play Northeastern and Connecticut.
