Jackets tame UConn Huskies, Win two in Boston
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Men's Lacrosse Team took on the UConn Huskies on Sunday in Boston. The Jackets were coming off a win against Northeastern the day before.
The Jackets got on the board first when Trey Ridder fed Asher Bernstein on the crease with 13:46 remaining in the first quarter. Less than a minute later Bernstein added his second goal of the game, this time from long distance. The Jackets dominated possession for the next several minutes, but could not convert until Augie Werthman scored a goal on a high bouncing shot late in the shot clock with 6:15 remaining. A minute and a half later Matt Seifert added his first goal of the game.
The Jackets dominated possession as Ben Skopicki kept feeding the Jackets the ball. The Yellow Jacket defense swarmed the Husky offense as the Jackets took away UConn's preferred outlets and forced the Huskies into the their second options. When the Huskies managed to get shots off, Owen Armentrout turned them away.
The Jackets opened the second quarter on an extra man opportunity and D.J. Louis stepped in fired a shot past the goalie from distance to put Tech up 5-0. UConn got on the board a few minutes later, but the Jackets were unphased. Freshman David Hull scored his first goal of the game with 3:25 remaining in the second quarter putting the Jackets up 6-1 at halftime.
Just like the first quarter, Asher Bernstein scored back to back goals to open the scoring early in the third quarter putting the Jackets up 8-1. The Huskies added another goal before Graeme Navarro picked a ground ball and scored a goal in transition. The Huskies scored again just before the third quarter expired to make the score 9-3 going into the final frame.
D.J. Louis fed Augie Werthman for an extra man goal with 11:27 remaining in the fourth quarter. A few minutes later freshman Jack Fishbein got his first career point as he threw a long transition pass to Bernstein near the goal who scored his fifth goal of the game. Down the stretch the Jackets were able to play all of their players who made the trip. Freshman Brennan Finch made the first save of his career. David Hull added the final goal for the Jackets as they sealed the 12-6 win. The Jackets now travel home and host Jacksonville University on Friday March 20.
