In conditions that defined a "Texas Toadstrangler" the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets faced off against the Tennessee Volunteers in the first round of the MCLA National Championships. The game was a rematch of a game from early March that the Yellow Jackets were able to win15-10. The Volunteers were not intimidated and took the game to the Yellow Jackets early taking a 5-2 lead. The Jackets as they've done previously slowly worked their way back one play at a time. Pierce Quarles found Joseph Rose for an extra man goal with just over a minute left in the half to pull the Jackets within 1 at 5-4. The Volunteers mostly controlled the first half, but the Georgia Tech defense found their footing and kept the Volunteers from building a bigger lead. Most of the Volunteer offense came on scrambled plays and unsettled situations.
The Volunteers got the first goal of the second half, but the Jackets got goals from Pierce Quarles and Michael Grosso to tie the game heading into the fourth quarter. The Jacket defense continued to stand tall and limited the Volunteer chances. Joseph Rose scored again to give the Jackets their first lead of the game. It was short lived as the Volunteers tied the game a few minutes later.
Neither offense could break through in the final minutes and the game headed into overtime. The Jackets controlled possession in the first overtime, but could not solve the Volunteer zone defense, sending multiple step down shots wide of the goal. The Volunteers dominated possession in the second stanza of extra time.and the Jackets got multiple stops, but couldn't get the ball cleared. Peter Zagrobelny made multiple saves for the Jackets. The game still knotted art 7 went to a third overtime. As the extra periods stacked up the crowd grew and the other games ended and people braved the deluge to see the dramatic finish. In the third overtime the Jackets got another stop and cleared the ball into their offensive zone. Brooks Baro dodged down the left side before moving the ball to DJ Louis who fed freshman Carl Dagher on the backside who fired home the game winner with under a minute remaining in the third overtime. The game marked the second consecutive overtime win for the Yellow Jackets.
The Jackets will advance to the quarterfinals to face the Texas Longhorns on Tuesday.
